You never truly know someone until you’ve lived with them. For just over two years, Alix and I’ve enjoyed living together in our Alexandria, Virginia apartment. Everyday we learn more about what makes the other one tick, while also enjoying the features of life under one roof. We’ve had some fun with these in the past, with our 1 month and 1 year recaps.

Living together began on a day full of wet snow. Seems fitting for a couple from Western New York.

Now after 2 years here are several things I can say:

  • Alix secretly enjoys reality TV “smut” (Bachelor, Kardashians) – but she will deny it if you ask.
  • I wake up early on the weekend to watch the shows I missed during the week and those that we don’t watch together (Walking Dead…) which is the reason I don’t bug Alix to wake up early.
  • We’ve both been sucked into, or at least increased, our interest in the other person’s TV preferences.
  • Ivan’s sleep schedule doesn’t change much on the weekends.weekendrecapNov15-1
  •  We still have a VERY CLOSED BATHROOM DOOR policy. No ifs, ands, or butts. Get it?? :)
  • Planning what to make for dinner is often the most difficult decision we make during the week. Chicken seems to be done a dozen different ways at our place.
  • Cleaning isn’t the same to everyone – Alix’s definition of clean far exceeds mine.
  • On that note, I’ve learned there is a right and wrong way to put the dishes into the dishwasher.
  • Alix loves chips as much as I love crackers. If we buy one, we need to buy both.

  • We have learned the importance of communication all over again.
      – It’s rare if we can actually go a week without making guacamole at least twice.

  • With a little help, my allergies are almost entirely immune to Ivan after 2 years.

  • Several routines have stayed the same. I wake up, take care of Ivan, pour coffee for the two of us, iron a shirt, and watch the news. Alix’s after-work routine regularly involves having a couple tortilla chips with sriracha before deep cleaning some part of the apartment.
  • Our night routine almost always includes falling asleep to a TV show in bed.
  • With the variety of foods we eat, there are still several things we don’t cook at home. Alix is cautious with seafood, and I still don’t enjoy mushrooms. Both of these are a work in progress.
  • We’ve found that we can both binge watch certain TV shows. We’ve gone through shows like Scandal, Tutors, Making a Murder, and are currently 4 seasons through The Good Wife.
  • Alix can cook and experiments with different recipes far more than she ever led on. For example, Thanksgiving stuffed Empanadas.

  • We can’t run errands without me insisting on buying Ivan another toy. It’s true, he has way too many.
  • Alix has an eye for projects and is normally the one making sure we complete them. If she didn’t, I’m sure we still wouldn’t have a gallery wall.
  • DIY-4
  • I’m about to marry one of the most playful people I’ve ever met. Jokes in the morning, dancing in the kitchen, and a variety of smiles have added more intrigue to spending every day with this girl.

hotel-28The next year is bound to be a busy one, and I’m sure after reading this, Alix will insist on less TV and more reading, and nothing will change about our closed bathroom door.
