The most elaborate hotels in Washington, DC are accompanied by some of the prestigious restaurants in the entire metro region.  The W Hotel’s Pinea is no different. And with the launch of their new whiskey bar, the Root Cellar, they are providing another enticing trip in.

On our recent visit, we again headed through the extravagant lobby of the W Hotel, and by patrons seated at the restaurant Pinea. the Root Cellar is situated at the back corner of restaurant and is preceeded by a swanky staircase which delivers you  right at the downstairs entrance.  The bar is dimly lit and accompanied by leather chairs, a fireplace, and a slightly more elegant spin on a traditional speakeasy. If you needed another reason to visit this historic DC location, the Root Cellar is it.

Since they open today, January 15, we have a couple recommendations for drinks. Our favorites were the Old Square (Knob Creek Rye, Apple Bitters, Remy vs. Dolin Rouge, and Benedectine) and the Kir Normandy (made with Foggy Ridge, Virginia Dry Cider). We also enjoyed the Hibernation which along with the Old Square can be found on the happy hour menu. After sampling several small plates our winner was the Crab and Guanciale Croquetas with a spicy remoulade
as well as the bruschetta trio (photo shown).
