The wait is over and this Friday, July 25th, marks the opening of Dupont Circle’s La Tomate Caffe’ to add to the already popular adjacent bistro. The addition of the caffe’ marks the first of several changes this family owned bistro plans to unveil in the 2014-2015 period.  I had the wonderful opportunity this week to take a sneak peak at several items La Tomate would be offering as part of their caffe’.

We’ve been hearing for the past month that La Tomate was everything from a “lovely Italian-style bistro” to “the best bar location in DC”, to put it lightly I was excited to see what all the hype was about. The new cafe definitely didn’t disappoint. From the circular marble tables to the checkered large tile flooring, every little section of the addition was perfectly placed.

“You had me at sparkling wine” was exactly the thought I had after sitting down and being handed a glass. I decided to avoid the multiple trips to all the food and stacked everything I could squeeze onto my plate. First, lets talk about the mozzarella cheese selection, 3 to choose from each having a different pairing. Two other dishes that really caught my attention were the Tramezzini with a spread of parma prosciutto, and the Erbazzone which was a puff pastry with onions, swiss chard, eggs, Parmesan cheese, and pancetta.

If they didn’t know the way to my heart already, next thing I knew a plate of 3 different desserts were placed in the middle of the table. The two larger desserts were both gluten free and emphasized being house made. For the chocolate enthusiast there was a wonderful chocolate cake, that was far from a regular slide of cake. Then there was a nice soft piece of ricotta cheese cake, that seemed to disappear exceptionally fast of our plate. Finally they added in a puff pastry dish that included freshly coated strawberries to finish off the plate.

The La Tomate Caffe’ is definitely a place I’ll be visiting again soon, I might even drift over to the bistro bar or enjoy the outdoor seating next time as well. Check out the opening on Friday, and enjoy several specials all day in addition to their menu.
